This study examines the role of musical activities in fostering social cohesion among students of the Music Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Medan. Musical activities constitute an important social practice that encourages interaction, collaboration, and a sense of belonging among students. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 54 students who actively participated in various musical activities, including choir, band, ensemble, and music performances. Data were collected through observations, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed through data reduction, categorization, and interpretation. The findings indicate that collective musical activities contribute significantly to the development of social cohesion through five major dimensions: cooperation, communication, sense of belonging, trust, and solidarity. Choir activities emerged as the most frequently attended activity, followed by bands and ensembles. Regular rehearsals, effective communication, shared goals, and supportive leadership were identified as key factors strengthening social cohesion. Meanwhile, scheduling conflicts, inconsistent attendance, unequal mastery of musical materials, and limited facilities were identified as major challenges. Despite these obstacles, students reported that musical activities enhanced interpersonal relationships, expanded social networks, and increased self-confidence. The study concludes that musical activities function not only as a medium for developing musical competence but also as an effective mechanism for strengthening social relationships and creating a supportive academic environment. These findings provide empirical support for the development of student programs based on collaborative musical engagement to promote social cohesion in higher education settings.
