Abstrak

This article aims to describe the physical dimensions and acoustic characteristics of Taganing produced by Kajiman Siagian. This article is motivated by the importance of preserving traditional Batak Toba musical instruments, especially Taganing as part of the Gondang Sabangunan ensemble, which has unique cultural, musical, and acoustic values. Research on the relationship between physical form and acoustic properties of Taganing is still limited; therefore, this paper was conducted to provide a deeper understanding of the physical structure of the musical instrument and the sound quality it produces. This article uses a descriptive qualitative method. The research objects include Taganing musical instruments, supporting equipment, and data from Taganing craftsmen collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of this paper indicate that the physical dimensions of Taganing greatly determine its acoustic characteristics. This musical instrument is made of jackfruit wood as the body of the Taganing, cowhide as the membrane, rattan rope as the binding, and mahogany as the supporting frame. The cylindrical shape of each drum affects the tone produced. Variations in size and material construction affect the frequency, intensity, resonance, and timbre of the Taganing sound. This study is expected to contribute to the study of organology and acoustics of traditional Toba Batak musical instruments and support efforts to preserve Indonesian traditional music.
