Abstract

This brief article aims to describe the essence of the author’s Independent Project entitled “Sih Ing Wiwit.” The term “Sih” means loving-kindness or affection, “Ing” refers to devotion, sincerity, and profound respect, while “Wiwit” in Old Balinese means parents. Within the context of Balinese Hinduism, Wiwit refers to the first Guru, or the one who is regarded as the first creator. Parents are those who give us our physical form as well as our first guidance, enlightenment, and direction in life. Therefore, their position is regarded as highly revered. The musical composition “Sih Ing Wiwit” represents the sincere love of a child, accompanied by profound respect, toward both parents. This concept is transformed into a musical work using the Gamelan Gong Suling as the medium of musical expression. The creative method employed in this musical composition refers to the creative process proposed by I Wayan Dibia in his book entitled Panca Sthiti Ngawi Sani. The creation of an artistic work consists of five stages: the Inspiration Stage (Ngawirasa), the Exploration Stage (Ngawacak), the Conception Stage (Ngarencana), the Execution Stage (Ngawangun), and the Production Stage (Ngebah). The form and structure of this work employ the Tri Angga structure, which consists of three sections: Pengawit, Pengawak, and Pengecet. Each section depicts the profound love of a child toward both parents. The arrangement of the musical elements, including the song structure, playing techniques, and gending motifs, is further developed through the exploration and manipulation of musical elements such as pitch, melody, tempo, rhythm, and dynamics, in order to strengthen the overall artistic expression of the composition.
