Objective: This study aims to analyze the drum set learning process in developing the motor coordination of students in the Music Education Program at the University of Lampung in the Major Instrument I: Percussion course. The focus of the study is on the learning stages, teaching strategies, and the dynamics of students’ motor adaptation. Method: The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using data collection techniques such as literature review, observation, and semi-structured interviews with five students. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis involving the stages of reduction, categorization, and interpretation, and their validity was tested through source triangulation. Results and Discussion: The results of this study indicate that a step-by-step approach to drum set instruction—beginning with basic techniques, progressing to the development of rhythmic patterns, and culminating in their application within a repertoire—significantly improves students’ motor coordination. The initial adaptation process was marked by difficulties in synchronizing hand and foot movements and maintaining tempo stability; however, these improved through repeated practice and systematic learning strategies. Furthermore, integrating technical exercises with musical contexts was shown to strengthen rhythmic understanding and movement control. The main constraints identified included limited practice facilities, which affected the intensity of students’ practice. Implications: This study contributes to the development of more effective and adaptive music practice learning strategies and underscores the importance of a structured approach in sustainably improving students’ motor and musical skills.
